CAMBA Joins City Hall Rally for Adult Literacy

CAMBA recently joined United Neighborhood Houses, fellow community-based organizations from the New York City Coalition for Adult Literacy (NYCCAL), and City Councilmember Alexa Avilés, Chair of the NYC Council’s Immigration Committee, at a City Hall rally calling for continued funding for Adult Literacy programs in the City’s budget.

“CAMBA is proud to stand with United Neighborhood Houses and our fellow community-based organizations at City Hall to advocate for continued funding for adult literacy,” said CAMBA President & CEO Valerie Barton-Richardson. “Every day, we see how access to adult education transforms lives—empowering all New Yorkers with the skills they need to thrive. This funding is not just a budget line; it’s a lifeline for thousands striving for a better future.”

Community-based adult literacy programs are free services that include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation. These programs have a life-changing impact, helping immigrant New Yorkers improve their English, pursue higher education, secure better-paying jobs, and take critical steps toward U.S. citizenship.
